UNITY CONSCIOUSNESS - What it is and isn't...
Unity consciousness is a HUGE topic and one that has been thrown around a lot in the spiritual and wellness world.
So I’ll discuss it how I experience this on a Personal level and how I ‘percieve’ this on a Collective level.
In my life as a Bi-racial child growing up in 80’s Australia, duality and polarity have played out in my life in very tough ways, often plaguing me with ‘Grass is Greener on the other side mentality’ where I’ve been asked to choose between my mothers or fathers ethnicity, often feeling forced to decide which side I relate to or ‘I AM’ more of. So from early on I’ve been torn between head and heart, spirit and matter, German versus Egyptian qualities and inflicted with extreme polarity thinking. Which of course causes schisms in the psyche.
For a very long time I believed that I will be happier and more ME, more comfortable in my skin once I settle fully into one paradigm or the other. This either/or decision making process has kept me chasing illusionary happiness in a future moment as well as forever perpetuating my not- enoughness. I do wish someone sooner offered me a Both/And option of limanilty that I feel now, instead of splitting me into Either/Or thinking which is emotionally infantile and does nothing but add more fear and harm in the world.
Also, another psychosis of duality that I was battling forever; inherited layer-by layer through the heavy conditioning of the Church was the infantile and highly suffocating perception that Women are either Virgins or Whores. A duality that I am still unpacking in my own skin as I reclaim my power, creativity, sensuality and sexuality that intrinsically comes with being a Woman.
Men in the church, especially the Catholics were aware of the inherent power of Women and therefore sought to take away that power by this eternal damnation and split in our own psyches that we can only be pure, holy virgins - like Mother Mary - or evil dirty whores like Mary Magdalena; which to those who did not grow up in the church can easily laugh off and see through. However, for Women like myself, to eliminate all 50 shades of grey ( another shitty Male dominated HIS-story of women ) - of infinite possibilities and more real likelihoods that exist between virgin and whore - is truly TOXIC and harms us all right down to the core of our psyches; affecting body, mind, soul and spirit. So, learning to inhabit that grey area of what it means to be a Woman is not just freeing - but truly fucken LIBERATING! And of course, the Vatican - or any 'organised' religion- did NOT want liberated Women as it scares the Holy Spirit right out of them, so back then they burnt us at the stakes instead with the genocide that was the Salem Witch Trials and now they censor or silence us..
Which is also why now we see millions of WISE women rising globally reclaiming their power, femininity, sensuality and creativity. Also learning to lean into the gorgeous rainbow radiance of what it means to be a Woman, away from the pathetic confines of Patriarchal polarity of our very spirits
So through religion and identity politics I have definitely felt and known polarity thinking for a very long time..
Finding a THIRD Space, a new liminal space is absolutely necessary to release the conditioning and unify all those divides within. This realisation Mentally landed for me in 2019, examining my Bi-racial ‘othering’ and belonging, I knew that it was solely up to me to embrace Both/And thinking rather than Either/Or. This brought me huge freedom; in my mind I literally saw a new path open up between two forks in the road.
This landed and became physically embodied also, through the daily practice of Yoga Nidra and Yoga teachings by my favourite Liberation teacher Leila Sadeghee. Yoga Nidra explores the concept of playing with opposites as part of the practice when you're already in a deeply relaxed and receptive space, almost trance like - away from the conscious mind which LIVES by dictates of polarity - thinking.
While in this elastic, liminal space - between different states of consciousness - the mind accesses altered states - dreamy states of consciousness ie the Delta or Theta brainwaves.
Which can often feel like nothing is happening, but on a deeper level is helping to reprogram the mind to move away from the confines of polarity thinking., Which when thought about -even briefly - is EPIC!
Yoga and movement practices help to physically shift stuck stuff in the body though when under the guidance of a liminal legend like Leila you leave class feeling that you've dipped into a deeper more Whole sense of YOU, away from conditioning, or at least underneath the layers of conditioning and programming and truly felt a degree or two closer to the real Self.
Now on a Collective level, Unity Consciousness is much deeper than the standard superficial gaslighting and false ‘light and love’ rubbish that's thrown around in the spiritual world. If only it were as simple as stating that We are all One.
In fact most people may never understand Oneness in this life until they've felt the deeply uncomfortable split that comes when we break off parts of ourselves that are not accepted or respected by society and shoved them into the shadows. Oneness within ourselves can only be understood when we go down into the dungeons of our shadow selves; observe, acknowledge, befriend and eventually integrate those parts of ourselves back into the bigger parts of our Self, so that the family of orphans is altogether and RE-UNITED.
Best to remember that shadows are NOT necessarily bad or wrong - though they often do get labelled that way - they are just Hidden. Like bright sunlight causes shadow in our 3D Earth realities, shadows within ourselves are just parts of ourselves that are unseen or hidden. Sometimes deliberately hidden or neglected and sometimes unconscuously, Once brought into the light - YES, the shame, guilt, and other shitty emotions may arise initially - but these pass once you have lovingly acknowledged these darker aspects of you, they just lose their power and dissolve.
Unity Consciousness IS achievable if every single human learned to embrace their shadows , the world would soon become a kinder, brighter and lighter place.
Practices like Yoga Nidra, Yin yoga and teaching liberation seeking yogis like Leila help you arrive at that point, bit bit by bit day by day.
As Resmaa Manken reminds us in anti-racism work ' We must get our REPS in daily'..
In the same way you go to the gym to practice your squats, in time you observe how you now need to increase the weight - because you have shifted your body boundaries. The same happens when you do the Liberation work of integrating your shadows as the goal of Unity Consciousness; daily 1 degree shifts of expanding your comfort zones and moving further away from the edges of polarity, brings us deeper into integration and in time the liminal third space - aka Unknown - opens up. This is necessary soul work and what Humanity needs if we are going to survive!
Let me know if you have any questions if you wish to practice yoga Nidra or learn more..
Remember we are all actively CO-CREATING This 3rd space from the deep dark abyss of the unknown, so just the fact that you are reading this means you ARE pulling in people that will help you align and shift closer and closer to that goal of Unity Cosnciousness.l
